The Hunger Games is now available on DVD/Blu-Ray, and how The Hunger Games was taken by movie-goers and critics

The Hunger Games, based on the novel with the same-name, is now on DVD. Blu-Ray and online! The film received excellent reviews, and has been subject to huge hype in the entertainment world.

On it’s opening day it pulled in $67.3 million which set records in the worldwide box office. It’s opening weekend had a gross of $152.5 million. In North America it pulled in $407 million, and outside of North America it pulled in only $277 million. Here in North America, it was publicized like crazy, with ads and billboards around just about every corner. In places outside of N.A. the film was promoted poorly, many people saying that they might not have known about THG if they weren’t a big fan. Some people argue (perhaps correctly) that had Lionsgate done a better job of promoting the film in Europe, Asia, Australia etc, they may have reached the top 50 highest grossing films list.

The film did very well at pulling in people who hadn’t read the book.  It was also subject to huge controversy. All though it was widely praised for its use of feminism, it was still criticised heavily for the film’s use of killing (which is also present in the book), and unrealistic body image. At one point, movie-goers criticised the film for using an African-American actress (the character Rue, who was actually African-American  in the book as well as the film, unlike what critics suggest), which caused anger among fans for the racism of these people.

Lionsgate was criticised for casting Jennifer Lawrence as the lead actress “she did not appear to have the weight of a person suffering from starvation”.

Target, the popular American store will be selling this version of The Hunger Games on DVD/Blu-Ray.

Yes, this film has had it’s far share of criticism. But the story of the book (and film) is remarkable, and was done incredibly well by Suzanne Collins and Lionsgate respectively. And this has been recognized with many award nominations, and wins as well. Including from the MTV Movie Awards, Teen Choice Awards, Kids’ Choice Awards, and many more.

In 2013 a sequel to the controversial film will be released, called The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, which will be based on the book named Catching Fire. Josh Hutcherson (Peeta) has a copy of the script for the film, which will be filming in Hawaii soon, and he had this to say.

“I do have a script in hand and it’s awesome. I love it so much,” Hutcherson confirmed, revealing that he met with newly installed director Francis Lawrence (“I Am Legend,” 2007, “Water for Elephants,” 2011) to discuss the film’s vision. “We talked about how important it was to really make the movie version of the book and that was Francis’s goal from day one — and the script definitely portrays that. It’s a very true-to-the-book rendition of the movie.”

-Josh Hutcherson via Yahoo! Movies

The sequel will be directed by Francis Lawrence (mentioned above), instead of Gary Ross who directed The Hunger Games. This is because Catching Fire will have an incredibly tight schedule, as Jennifer Lawrence will be working on X-Men in January 2013, allowing less than 5 months for shooting. Yes, this is going to be one rushed movie. However, it will have plenty of time for Post-Production, as it will not be in theatres until November 22, 2013.

The only question left for this film, is how successful will the sales be for DVD/Blu-Ray? The film will also be available on a wide variety of online platforms as well, including iTunes.

What did you think of the film? Do you think this film will be successful on DVD/Blu-Ray? Leave a comment below.

Lionsgate announces release dates for ‘Mockingjay’ Parts 1 and 2

Lionsgate, the studio behind The Hunger Games and the 2013 film Catching Fire, has announced the release dates for Mockingjay Parts 1 and 2.

They announced that Part 1 will hit theaters on November 21st, 2014 and Part 2 on November 20th, 2015. In case your forgot, Catching Fire will be in theaters on November 23rd, 2013.

That gives each movie one year for production. 2015 feels so far away!

What do you think of these release dates? What do you think about Mockingjay being split in two? Personally, I believe that Catching Fire should have been split in two instead.

Lionsgate has announced that Catching Fire (sequel to The Hunger Games), will be called The Hunger Games: Catching Fire. Similar to The Twilight Saga.

Official: Gary Ross says he will NOT direct Catching Fire

Gary Ross, director of The Hunger Games, announced that he will not direct the sequel to the Blockbuster film. (Image via The Hollywood Reporter)

We have some sad (or maybe for some of you… Happy) news to share. Gary Ross has gone out and said that he will not be directing Catching Fire. He announced this after meeting with Lionsgate yesterday.

Despite recent speculation in the media, and after difficult but sincere consideration, I have decided not to direct Catching Fire. As a writer and a director, I simply don’t have the time I need to write and prep the movie I would have wanted to make because of the fixed and tight production schedule.

I loved making The Hunger Games – it was the happiest experience of my professional life. Lionsgate was supportive of me in a manner that few directors ever experience in a franchise: they empowered me to make the film I wanted to make and backed the movie in a way that requires no explanation beyond the remarkable results. And contrary to what has been reported, negotiations with Lionsgate have not been problematic. They have also been very understanding of me through this difficult decision.

I also cannot say enough about the people I worked with: Producer Nina Jacobson, a great collaborator and a true friend; the brilliant Suzanne Collins, who entrusted us with her most amazing and important story; the gifted and remarkable Jennifer Lawrence whose performance exceeded my wildest expectations, and the rest of the incredible cast, whom I am proud to call my friends.

To the fans I want to say thank you for your support your faith, your enthusiasm and your trust. Hard as this may be to understand I am trying to keep that trust with you. Thank you all. It’s been a wonderful experience.

-Gary Ross

Lionsgate has also issued a small statement as well. All though they seem to be calm about Ross not directing the movie, a Lionsgate insider says that Lionsgate was expecting the news to break any day now.

We’re very sorry that Gary Ross has chosen not to direct Catching Fire. We were really looking forward to making the movie with him. He did an incredible job on the first film and we are grateful for his work. This will not be the end of our relationship, as we consider Ross to be part of the Lionsgate family and look forward to working with him in the future.

-Lionsgate

Some of the cast of The Hunger Games have given some thoughts on Ross not directing the sequel.

“One thing about Gary is, he can do everyone’s job better than you can,” Ludwig told E!. “It’s an honor working with such a talented director. He is an unbelievable guy and an actor’s director, which is amazing…. Nobody could really do what Gary did. I honestly believe that 100 percent.”

-Alexander Ludwig (Cato) via E! Online

“That makes me so sad,” she said. “I’m sorry, I can’t move on yet. I’m still in mourning. I don’t know that anyone else could bring it to life the way that he did.”

-Jacqueline Emerson (Foxface)

Dayo Okeniyi, who played Thresh, gave some suggestions on who could possibly direct the sequel.

“I’d like to see a David Fincher Catching Fire or Darren Aronofsky,” he said. “I think he’d be amazing for the second movie. Be a little bit edgier, darker.”

WHo do you think should direct Catching Fire?

Gary Ross will not direct Catching Fire

I have some disappointing (to me), news to share. Gary Ross, director of the extremely successful Hunger Games, will not be directing Catching Fire. Ross notified Lionsgate earlier this week, but we just received the news online.

The Playlist has learned that Gary Ross has officially exited the franchise and will not direct the sequel, formally giving Lionsgate and Summit his notice earlier this week, that he will not be coming back.

-IndieWire

I wrote in my article on how Catching Fire should be split into two movies, that I believe Lionsgate would be wise to continue with Gary Ross, yesterday.

This is surprising because Gary Ross was speaking about his plans for Catching Fire earlier. Hopefully Gary Ross will continue to be involved in some way with Catching Fire.

When Lionsgate comments, it will be posted here at Magnae Famae.

Catching Fire should be split into two movies

Kyle Stewart’s Opinion on why Catching Fire should get two movies instead of one.

[SPOILERS AHEAD] Lionsgate has said that the incredibly successful (thus far) Hunger Games Franchise will have not three, but four movies. This means that one book will get two movies, as there are three books in the trilogy.

Many fans believe that Lionsgate will follow in the steps of Harry Potter and Twilight, a and split the final film.

I hope that they don’t split Mockingjay in half.

This is why… Firstly, where in the world are you going to end Mockingjay Part 1? You could maybe get away with ending as District 13 is being bombed, and you would get a cliffhanger (Does Prim make it back?).

Meanwhile for Catching Fire, it already is practically split in half… Pre-Hunger Games and Hunger Games. Both halves would make great movies. Both have a fair amount of Action as well, which is vital for each Hunger Games film to be successful.

Gary Ross, the director of The Hunger Games, is currently in negotiations to continue as director for Catching Fire. I think that it would be interesting to have the same director, with the same vision, direct each movie in the trilogy, unlike what happened with Twilight and Harry Potter.

Catching Fire is my favorite book in The Hunger Games series, and I have a ‘high bar’ set for Lionsgate to make a fantastic film, as they did with The Hunger Games. I think that Catching Fire should have two movies, not Mockingjay.

Catching Fire is starting filming in September 2012, as we previously reported. And, Lionsgate already has a release date set for the movie, November 22nd, 2013.

With all that time… they had better do it right.
