So- You may lose your internet tomorrow…

Via the FBI

You may have heard about this piece of malware called DNSChanger. Hope that you don’t have it on your computer, if you do, July 8th will be your last day with internet.

Simply put, DNSChanger is a trojan horse malware that you don’t want on your system. What it does is when you tell it to go to (example) magnaefamae.com, it will redirect you (via the bad guy’s DNS servers), to possibly a different website, or it may place ads on the website, and even steal all of your personal information, as you browse the web. The people behind DNSChanger pulled in over $14 million, according to estimates.

The people who created DNSChanger were caught by the American FBI, and arrested. But, the FBI kept these DNS (Domain Name System) Servers up, but it costs them money. So, on July 9th, these servers are being shut down. People affected with DNSChanger will no longer be able to access the internet,

333,000 people are currently affected with DNSChanger. All of whom will lose internet access tomorrow. Keep in mind that is a small fraction of the people on the internet today, but there is always a chance you could be one of them.

You can go to this website, to get your computer ‘tested’ for DNSChanger. It takes one second to do. If you see a green image, you do not have DNSChanger on your computer. If you see red… you are infected.

If you are infected you may want to consider buying a new computer. There is free software available, but it is complicated, and is not able to completely guarantee that you will not get it again.

Make sure you have some kind of anti-malware installed on your computer, and you should be OK (that is, if you choose the right program)!
