Apple confirms password vulnerability, and that they are working on a fix

images (1)It was unveiled earlier today that there was a massive password vulnerability with Apple’s iForgot my Password option by the tech press.

The vulnerability allowed for one’s password to be reset simply by providing the email and date of birth of the account holder. Not something particularly difficult to find. In the mean time, Apple has closed down iForgot.

Apple released a statement to The Verge saying:

“Apple takes customer privacy very seriously. We are aware of this issue, and working on a fix.”

This is obviously a very serious issue, that will hopefully be resolved quickly for Apple account holders.

Will you, or someone you know be buying the new 128GB iPad?

Apple posts record Q1 2013 earnings

Image via Reuters

Image via Reuters

On January 23, 2013, Apple posted their Q1 2013 earnings. Rumors have been flying around for some time that this wouldn’t be a great earnings report. The rumors weren’t exactly right, but they weren’t wrong either.

Apple made $13.1 billion in profit, with $54.5 billion in revenue (not bad…). In most cases, investors were expecting more.

BY THE NUMBERS

  • 47.8 million iPhones sold this Quarter (Wall Street expected 48 million)
  • 22.9 million iPads sold this Quarter (Wall Street expected 22-23 million)
  • 4.1 million Mac sold (Wall Street expected 5 million)
  • 12.7 million iPods (Wall Street expected 12 million)

In many cases they were close. But not close enough.

APPLE STATS

    • Over half a billion iOS devices have been activated.
    • iPhone sales in China have doubled year-over-year. The company posted $7.3 billion in revenue from the China region in Q1.
    • As we knew, Apple had delays producing its new iMac, and Peter Oppenheimer says that “we believe our Mac sales would have been much higher absent these constraints.”
    • Apple’s retail stores are averaging 23,000 visitors per week, a seven percent increase.
    • The company didn’t specify its iPad mini sales, but Tim Cook said “we could not build enough iPad minis to come into a demand balance.”
    • Apple says it has delivered 4 trillion notifications in Notification Center, and it has 200 million Game Center users.
    • Tim Cook says that the Apple TV remains “an area of intense interest,” and that the company has sold over 2 million during the quarter — up almost 60 percent year-over-year.

Apple CEO, Tim Cook, had this to say:

“I see cannibalization as a huge opportunity for us,” Cook said. “Our core philosophy is to never fear cannibalization. If we don’t do it, someone else will. We know that iPhone has cannibalized some of our iPod business. That doesn’t worry us. We know that iPad will cannibalize some Macs. But that’s not a concern. On iPad in particular, we have the mother of all opportunities because the Windows market is much, much larger than the Mac market. It is clear that it is already cannibalizing some. I still believe the tablet market will be larger than the PC market at some point. You can see by the growth in tablets and pressure on PCs that those lines are beginning to converge.”

“If somebody buys an iPad mini or an iPad, if it’s their first Apple product, a percentage of these people wind up buying another type of Apple product, [...] If you remember what we had termed the halo effect for the iPod with the Mac, we’re very confident that will happen with the iPad as well.”

What do you think of Apple’s Q1 2013 earnings?

Apple shocks at keynote, unveiling 2 new iPads, 3 new Macs

Apple has unveiled a 4th Generation iPad, a new iMac, a 13-inch retina Macbook Pro, and of course the iPad Mini, today in San Jose.

iPad Mini

You’ve heard the rumours. Apple was set to unveil a new product at today’s keynote. A new 7.85 inch iPad, appropriately called the iPad Mini.

As you’ve seen above, some people can hold it in one hand. This is something we are seeing a lot in their promotional photos around their website.

“Beautiful from every angle. Incredibly thin and light.”

The iPad Mini is “as thin as a pencil” at 7.2mm. It weighs about 0.62 lbs.

Inside includes the not-so-new A5 processor. The display is unexpectedly only 1024 x 768, not retina.

The iPad Mini starts at $329 for 16GB and Wifi. The Cellular+ Wifi model starts at $459. It comes in with both black and white. Pre-orders begin on October 26th. The iPad Mini will be in-stores on November 2nd.

iMac

The new iMac is 5mm thin. Yes. 5mm.

Apple got rid of the optical drive. This is abnormal for desktops… unless you are Apple.

The new iMac will start at $1229 for their 21.5 inch model.

4th Generation iPad

Unexpectedly, a new iPad was also shown today. What is it being called? iPad with Retina Display. Very creative.

The only differences between the new iPad and the iPad with Retina Display is the speed. It has the new A6X processor.

One more thing. It has “ultra-fast internet connectivity,” and the lightning connector.

This new iPad (I’m talking about the new iPad, not the new iPad), starts at $499.

13-inch Macbook Pro with Retina

Previously, only a 15-inch model of the Macbook Pro with Retina was available. Now, a 13-inch model is also available.

There are no enhancements to this model, just a smaller body and screen.

This new Mac starts at $1699 with 128GB.

Mac Mini

The amazing $599 Mac Mini has (finally) been updated.

It supports Thunderbolt, USB 3, and  Intel Ivy Bridge processors.

The Mac Mini has suffered the loss of its Optical Drive.

5 new products were launched today. What do you think of them? Will you be buying the iPad Mini? Leave a comment below.

The event will be taking place at the standard 10AM Pacific (1PM Eastern).

The iPad Mini will be a smaller 7-inch version of the iPad. Rumours also tell us that Apple will unveil  a 13-inch model of the retina Macbook Pro and new Mac Minis.

Tim Cook remembering Steve Jobs

Steve Jobs (Right) and Steve Wozniak (Via Webgle)

A year ago today, Steve Jobs passed away. Jobs, the co-founder and former CEO of Apple, is remembered in this video featuring Steve Jobs. The video took-over Apple’s website.

A message from Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO.

Steve’s passing one year ago today was a sad and difficult time for all of us. I hope that today everyone will reflect on his extraordinary life and the many ways he made the world a better place.

One of the greatest gifts Steve gave to the world is Apple. No company has ever inspired such creativity or set such high standards for itself. Our values originated from Steve and his spirit will forever be the foundation of Apple. We share the great privilege and responsibility of carrying his legacy into the future.

I’m incredibly proud of the work we are doing, delivering products that our customers love and dreaming up new ones that will delight them down the road. It’s a wonderful tribute to Steve’s memory and everything he stood for.

The iPhone 5 running iOS 6

iOS 6 available to download tomorrow

The iPhone 5 running iOS 6

iOS 6 will be available to download beginning tomorrow, on September 18th. iOS 6 will be available for iPhone 3GS,4, 4S and 5; iPod Touch 4th and 5th Generation; iPad 2 and the new iPad.

A reminder: The iPhone 5 won’t be available until September 21st, and the iPod Touch (5th Generation) will not be available until October.

Here are some of the new features of iOS 6.

  • Maps
  • Siri
  • Facebook Integration
  • Passbook
  • FaceTime
  • Phone

Maps

As mentioned previously, Apple’s new Maps app allows you to search around the city… from the sky. Apple flew helicopters over some major cities around the world, so you could explore the city from above.

This app is replacing the previously pre-installed Google Maps app.

Siri

Siri has been improved and updated. It can now give you Sports Scores, Movie Reviews, and make a restaurant Reservation.

Siri will be available to the new iPad, iPhone 5, iPhone 4S, and iPod Touch 5th Generation.

Facebook

Now Facebook is heavily integrated with iOS. You can now instantly share just about anything to your Facebook account.

We have some good/bad news. All of your Facebook friends are now going to be added to your contacts, and their birthdays to your calendar… take that as you wish…

Passbook

Passbook is a new pre-installed app from Apple, that allows you to keep track (not to mention use) your credit/debit cards, loyalty cards, plane tickets, movie tickets and more, right from your iPhone.

FaceTime

On select carriers, you will now be able to use FaceTime over a cell network. Contact your carrier for additional information.

Phone

Now you can return a call with a text message, or remind yourself later, instead of just hanging up.

This will be great when you are busy, maybe you are in a meeting and can’t take the call. This feature is perfect if you find yourself in these scenarios. Even if you don’t, it’s a good thing to have, should you ever need it.

Podcasts

Now, Podcasts have left the Music App.

Don’t worry though! Apple has released an app called Podcasts that works… horribly.

It has a great design, but has so many bugs, that I just keep using the Music app. Tomorrow, we may not have that choice.

What else?

  • The Mail app has been slightly redesigned.
  • In Safari you can now …
    • use iCloud Tabs (tab syncing)
    • use Full-Screen Landscape
    • create an offline reading list
  • The camera now has panorama (only on iPhone 4S, iPhone 5 and iPod Touch 5th generation)

Tell us what you think of iOS 6, once you have it.

Apple announces new iPhone, iPods in San Francisco

As anticipated, Apple announced their iPhone 5 on September 12th in San Francisco. Along with the iPhone update, they announced a brand new version of iTunes and a 5th Generation iPod Touch, they also completely redesigned the iPod Nano.

The iPhone 5 will cost $199 (16GB). Pre-orders start September 14th, ship on September 21st.

iPhone 5

Apple’s new 4G LTE phone, has a new processor (the A6 processor), which loads pages 2.1 times faster than previous generations of the mobile device.

iOS 6

In iOS 6, Apple gets rid of Google almost entirely, with the removal of the YouTube app and Google Maps, which will be replaced by Maps.

The new Operating System has some great new apps including Passbook, which allows you to replace your Credit Cards/Loyalty Cards and even Flight tickets with your iPhone.

As mentioned previously, Apple’s new Maps app allows you to search around the city… from the sky. Apple flew helicopters over some major cities around the world, so you could explore the city from above.

iOS 4 came packed with Twitter. iOS 6 has Facebook and Twitter.

Taller, Thinner by Design

“The thinnest smartphone in the world,” is what Apple is bragging about. The phone has also jumped up in height… 3.5 inch to 4 inch display, this allows for an additional row of icons.

iPhone 5 is also lighter, but is the exact same width, this allows people with normal sized hands to continue to use the phone.

Lightning connector

Apple has gotten rid of the 30-pin connector, for a new “lightning connector“. The connector is 80% smaller than the previous connector.

If you already own a 30-pin connecting dock, you will need to buy a special Lightning-30-pin adapter. These cost $30.

Battery Life

iPhone 5 has a 8-hour browsing battery life (over LTE), 8-hour talk time, and a 10-hour video playback battery life, according to Apple.

Carriers

In Canada, several carriers will have the iPhone 5 including Bell, Rogers, Telus, Virgin and Koodo. In America only AT&T, Verizon and Sprint… still no T-Mobile.

EarPods

Apple wanted to redo their headphones. They came up with EarPods, which will be shipping with all of the devices announced today.

The EarPods are designed to be more comfortable, and better than before.

Camera

The iSight Camera (rear) has a 8 megapixel sensor. The camera now also allows for panoramas, up to 28 megapixels. It is 40% faster than previously. Video can be recorded in 1080p.

Conclusion

iPhone 5 looks almost the exact same as the iPhone 4S (except the height, of course). This is not a major upgrade. However, analysts predict that the iPhone 5 will still pull in a lot of sales for Apple.

The new iPod Touch

iPod Touch

The new $299 5th generation iPod Touch (32GB and 64GB only) was announced today. Apple plans to continue selling the 4th generation iPod Touch (8GB) for $199.

It features iOS 6 (see above), the new EarPods, and it is taller and thinner than before.

Pre-orders begin September 14th, ships in October.

Colours!

The 5th generation iPod Touch is coming in a variety of colours. The classic black and white, and now Blue, Green and Red!

Siri

An improved Siri is making its way to iPod Touch users at last.

The Loop & Camera

Apple has included a small hole at the bottom of the iPod Touch… for a loop! This is making the iPod Touch a camera. The camera has been improved to 5 megapixels… that 7 times better than the 4th generation.

A5 Processor

Apple has updated the iPod Touch’s processor to an A5 processor, making it “the most powerful iPod Touch ever.”

Battery Life

40 hours of music and 8 hours of video playback on a single charge, Apple says.

Conclusion

This is easily the best iPod Touch ever released, and with these great looking new colours…

The new iPod Nano.

iPod Nano

For the third time, the classic iPod Nano has been redesigned from the inside out.

The iPod Nano starts at $149. It includes the new EarPods (see above) and lightning connector (see above).

Pre-orders begin September 14th, ships in October.

Video’s back!

For the past two versions of the iPod Nano, video was left standing out in the cold. Now it’s back on this 2.5 inch display.

Radio

The iPod Nano has it’s FM Radio Tuner back, to keep us you up to date with all of the latest.

Bluetooth

As with all of the other devices announced today, Apple has included Bluetooth wireless technology in the upgrade. So now, you can use those wireless headphones.

Conclusion

The Nano looks great, and it comes in some amazing colours. Now, it’s up to you to decide which Nano!
