The iPhone 5 running iOS 6

iOS 6 available to download tomorrow

The iPhone 5 running iOS 6

iOS 6 will be available to download beginning tomorrow, on September 18th. iOS 6 will be available for iPhone 3GS,4, 4S and 5; iPod Touch 4th and 5th Generation; iPad 2 and the new iPad.

A reminder: The iPhone 5 won’t be available until September 21st, and the iPod Touch (5th Generation) will not be available until October.

Here are some of the new features of iOS 6.

  • Maps
  • Siri
  • Facebook Integration
  • Passbook
  • FaceTime
  • Phone

Maps

As mentioned previously, Apple’s new Maps app allows you to search around the city… from the sky. Apple flew helicopters over some major cities around the world, so you could explore the city from above.

This app is replacing the previously pre-installed Google Maps app.

Siri

Siri has been improved and updated. It can now give you Sports Scores, Movie Reviews, and make a restaurant Reservation.

Siri will be available to the new iPad, iPhone 5, iPhone 4S, and iPod Touch 5th Generation.

Facebook

Now Facebook is heavily integrated with iOS. You can now instantly share just about anything to your Facebook account.

We have some good/bad news. All of your Facebook friends are now going to be added to your contacts, and their birthdays to your calendar… take that as you wish…

Passbook

Passbook is a new pre-installed app from Apple, that allows you to keep track (not to mention use) your credit/debit cards, loyalty cards, plane tickets, movie tickets and more, right from your iPhone.

FaceTime

On select carriers, you will now be able to use FaceTime over a cell network. Contact your carrier for additional information.

Phone

Now you can return a call with a text message, or remind yourself later, instead of just hanging up.

This will be great when you are busy, maybe you are in a meeting and can’t take the call. This feature is perfect if you find yourself in these scenarios. Even if you don’t, it’s a good thing to have, should you ever need it.

Podcasts

Now, Podcasts have left the Music App.

Don’t worry though! Apple has released an app called Podcasts that works… horribly.

It has a great design, but has so many bugs, that I just keep using the Music app. Tomorrow, we may not have that choice.

What else?

  • The Mail app has been slightly redesigned.
  • In Safari you can now …
    • use iCloud Tabs (tab syncing)
    • use Full-Screen Landscape
    • create an offline reading list
  • The camera now has panorama (only on iPhone 4S, iPhone 5 and iPod Touch 5th generation)

Tell us what you think of iOS 6, once you have it.
