After having a day full of bronze medals (July 31st), Canada is finally moving up, starting the day with a silver in men’s eight rowing. All though Canada had a gold medal to defend in the Olympic men’s eight rowing, a silver seems fine to many Canadians, after so many Bronze.

“After all we’ve been through here (having a poor first race and being forced into repechage), this was special,” said Byrnes, who was a member of the Beijing crew. “We knew if we stayed close to the Germans, we could battle with the Brits and Aussies for second. It’s a great feeling.”

Jerry Brown admitted that “this is the greatest moment of my life”. Canada lost to Germany, but defeated Great Britain, the United States, the Netherlands, and Australia, who finished in that order. Germany crossed the line at 5:48.75, while Canada crossed at 5:49.98.
