An NDP (New Democratic Party) MP, Sana Hassainia, was kicked out of the House of Commons this week for having a baby with her at a vote. She says it was all a misunderstanding.
Hassainia brought her 3-month-year old baby to the House of Commons with her before a “key vote”. Many fellow MPs were delighted and even took Pictures of the baby and the Mother.
“They told me some MPs had noticed the presence of my baby in the House,” she said at a hastily called news conference, Skander-Jack in her arms.
In the end, it turned out that the speaker was concerned about the cameras , not the baby. However she was asked to never bring the baby to work with her again. This could cause problems because she is breastfeeding according to the The Star.
Hassainia was not allowed to take a maternity leave, because no MPs currently can.
“It will certainly happen again with the MPs we have,” Hassainia said. “We have many women who are at the age of creating a family, so it will happen again for sure.”
